An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee that has been formally designated to approve, monitor, and review all types of research — including biomedical and behavioral research — involving human and animal subjects conducted by researchers of the University.

Objectives of the IRB

  • To ensure research uses scientifically sound research proposals.
  • To abide by accepted international guidelines such as the Helsinki Declaration.
  • To ensure the rights, dignity, and welfare of the participants involved in the research.

Functions of IRB

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) plays a vital role in maintaining ethical and scientific integrity in research conducted within the university.

It will ensure the highest standard of research using scientifically sound research projects. IRB will develop its own guidelines or adopt reputable online guidelines to be followed by the University.

IRB may monitor the progress of research and introduce periodic audits to ensure proper implementation of the project.

Special care will be taken for any new drug or procedure as intervention to ensure participant safety. Separate guidelines will be developed or accepted online guidelines will be followed.

IRB will assess ethical aspects of all research projects in line with international standards, and may create localized or national guidelines as needed.

Separate guidelines will be created for collaborations with other institutions or bodies, whether domestic or international.

The IRB will develop policies for the preservation and future use of biological samples inside or outside the country.

Separate guidelines will be developed for research involving stem cells and gene studies.
